On 6th November 2025, AWE hosted its first event with the Women in Explosives group, part of the Institute of Explosive Engineers (IExpE). The group aims to improve experiences for women in the explosives industry, build a supportive network and drive positive change in recruitment and retention.
The event brought together women and male allies from across the commercial and defence explosives sectors, with representatives from BAE Systems, DE&S, QinetiQ, DSTL, HSE, Roxel, Ramora, Cranfield University, IExpE and AWE.
The day featured discussions on diversity, maternity leave and returning to work. Emma Willes, Operations Manager at Ramora and Chair of Women in Explosives, led a discussion on improving support for women, including phased returns, tailored support and greater engagement from senior leaders.
A panel of five AWE women leaders also shared their career journeys, achievements and experiences in a traditionally male-dominated industry, offering advice and inspiration to those entering the sector.
Attendees then toured AWE’s historical collection and explosive facilities across TT&EBU and XBU, before hearing a keynote from Nicola Roberts, “A Career in Explosives – A Woman’s Perspective.” Nicola reflected on her career as an Ammunition Technical Officer, Explosive Ordnance Disposal troop member, Major, Squadron Leader and Inspector of Explosives, highlighting resilience, leadership and the importance of challenging stereotypes.
The next step for the group is to turn the issues raised into tangible action across the explosives sector.
AWE thanks everyone who contributed to the event and supported the women in explosives poster display.
