Qualifying Criteria

The status of Fellow is the highest professional grade membership. Fellowship of the Institute of Explosives Engineers is bestowed on an individual for notable contributions made by that individual to the explosives sector and applicants should understand that the awarding of Fellowship will be a reflection of the individual’s professional achievements and standing within the explosives profession, and the contributions made and recognised by the applicants peer group. The awarding of a Fellowship will, where appropriate, also reflect the contributions made to the Institute and its membership as a whole.

Fellows are expected to conduct themselves in a manner conducive with that grade of membership, recognising that they are Ambassadors of the Institute.

Prior to submitting an application for membership as a Fellow of IExpE please ensure you satisfy and confirm the following minimum requirements:

You are over 35 years of age; and

Have had at least 15 years of experience in pursuits connected with explosives engineering; and

Has been a voting member of the Institute for a minimum of five years (unless via direct entry).

You are, to the satisfaction of Council, either:

  • recognised by others, in your own specialist field, as a leading authority by having planned, negotiated, organised and supervised work of a sufficiently complex nature and responsibility, or
  • recognised by scientific and academic bodies as a research leader or technical innovation in your chosen field, or
  • a regular, authoritative contributor to scientific or technical papers on explosives-related sciences, engineering or related topics, or
  • known to have contributed greatly to the improvement in safety practices and standards within the explosives industry.

When submitting an application for Fellow, applicants are required to provide two detailed professional references that should also contain information to support the referee’s view that the applicant is worthy of selection for this award. Applications will be submitted in a sufficiently detailed format that allows the reviewing Board to understand the contributions made by the applicant, and against which, the notable contributions can be assessed and measured.

Once received, applications that meet the above criteria will be passed to a Fellowship Board set up to review and validate the application. The Board will consist of the President and Vice President, Membership sitting with no less than 2 sector specialists who are familiar with the applicants work or working area, and who will be able to review in detail the suitability of the application.

The Board will make its recommendation and submit that to Council for consideration. The Council may accept or decline the application. Council is not obliged to approve any applications for Fellowship. Successful applicants will be awarded status of Fellow of the Institute of Explosives Engineers (FIExpE).

When submitting your application please be aware of the Institute’s policy in relation to criminal convictions and insolvency.  If you have at the time of entering the Institute, or subsequently acquire, any relevant conviction or become subject to any order of Insolvency you need to declare them.

The Institute has been approved by the Board of the Inland Revenue, under Section 201, Income and Corporation Taxes Act 1988 for members whose Tax affairs are dealt with in the UK to obtain Income Tax Relief on their Subscriptions.
