Guidance for Referees

When applying for membership, applicants are required to nominate referees to support
their application.

References help us to:

  • Confirm the applicant’s identity.
  • Verify the applicant’s relevant experience and professional background.
  • Confirm that the level of membership applied for is appropriate.

Referees will be asked to complete a reference form confirming their support of the application. The form must be completed in full and include all the information requested.

Incomplete references may result in delays to the processing of the membership application.

Referee Criteria

To ensure references are independent and provide sufficient evidence to support the application, referees must meet the following requirements:

  • Direct knowledge: Referees must provide information based on their own direct knowledge and experience of the applicant.
  • Independence: Referees must be independent of the applicant and must not be a relative.
  • Current role: Referees must state their full current job title/role and the length of time they have held that position.
  • Knowledge of the applicant: The reference must explain the capacity in which the referee knows the applicant and how long they have known them.
  • Relevant experience: The reference must confirm the referee’s knowledge of the applicant’s experience working with explosives, including relevant dates, job roles and responsibilities.
  • Different organisations: Referees must not be from the same company or organisation as each other.
  • Current employer or line manager: At least one referee must be the applicant’s current line manager or employer.
