The event will look at the full UXO mitigation process, highlighting current practices, where improvements can be made, and how better data collection, knowledge sharing and environmentally responsible disposal methods can be prioritised.
As marine development grows around the UK, across Europe and worldwide, more legacy munitions are being uncovered. Clearing UXO safely and with minimal environmental impact is essential to protect people, marine ecosystems and planned infrastructure, while avoiding disruption to existing sea users.
Background
Maritime unexploded ordnance (UXO) includes munitions like bombs and mines that failed to detonate as intended. These are found in coastal waters around the UK, the Baltic and elsewhere, often in areas used for past military activity or munitions dumping. Offshore wind farms and other developments must reduce UXO risks to as low as reasonably practicable.
Traditionally, UXO has been cleared by detonating it with added explosives, but this harms marine life and habitats and disrupts seabed conditions. Newer, lower-impact disposal methods are now preferred by UK regulators.
A range of sponsorship and exhibiting options are available at the Unexploded Ordnance – Mitigation in the marine environment conference, offering companies the opportunity to raise their profile at this industry event.
