1200 Geoff Smith – Gunpowder Engines. Before the days of steam, there was an evident need for a means of motive power and gunpowder was an obvious candidate. A search on the internet informs us that Christiaan Huygens designed a gunpowder engine, he did not build it and it could not have worked. The facts are rather different – and the engines’ descendents are still with us.
