Thanks again everyone, the underwriters have confirmed in writing to me that they have to honour what happening at the time the policy is taken out ie, if no work is planned in that involved travel to risky locations then they have to honour the policy. Even if 6 months down the line I end up in West Africa or North Africa carrying out work that involves explosives in some description. They did say say that being a member of the institute was a plus.

Thanks once again!

Hi Nick,

I wish there was a decent insurance company. I don’t trust PAX one bit heard too many bad stories of them not paying out and when they do it’s a small amount! Bellwood Prestbury do cover but very expensive for IEDD cover!

Have a look at CURA - a specialist insurer for hazardous occupation personnel which doesn't list explosives engineers specifically but does list Army EOD personnel and other occupations like Test pilots and deep sea divers.

Nick

As an Ammunition Technician, EOD/IEDD Operator and military parachutist I had PAX Family cover for over 30 years during my military career and any claim was processed and paid quickly - admittedly all accident or sporting injuries related.

RPAX now appears as XPAX but I can't see any difference in cover but the premium over PAX is higher depending on the number of units required (15 units max).

I also had several Endowment & Whole Life insurance policies during the 1980/90/00s and being an Ammo Tech never caused any issues with any provider.

I have recently read some 'old' negative reports on PAX being slow to pay out/not paying out for injuries sustained during military operations in Afghanistan but the issue related to defining what constituted 'permanent disability'.

Hope this helps.

I had to have life insurance when I got my mortgage. To be honest they were not interested in me being an explosive engineer, they were more concerned with my Wife's family history of cancer.

Hi Nick,
My Life Insurance is through RPAX, not cheap but just kept it going (just to be safe, you know what insurance is like, if you haven’t had it for 6 months. They’re going to wriggle out any kind of payment)
Aye so, RPAX covered for skiing, water sports, land mines and IED’s. so imagine other explosive issues would be covered.
Give it a google, I can send you a link if you need

Cheers
