New Web Site

Posted in Public News: 30 April 2009, 20:04 by Joe Hastings

Welcome to the Institute of Explosives Engineers re-vamped web site. It promises to be a significant step forward, especially as the former site was showing signs of age and creaking functionality as emerging web technologies began to pass it by.

Content Management System

The new site is built on a leading Content Management System, which provides those who help manage the Institute from within and from without a great new communications tool.

Structure and Navigation

There are two interlinked parts to the site.

Static

The first contains the vital information about the Institute, what it is, what it does, where it is, that kind of thing. That part of the site is commanded by the top navigation bar and the information it contains tends to be constant and static in nature. When you are in this section of the site, contextual navigation appears on the LHS.

Dynamic

The second part of the site existed on the previous site too but its functionality is greatly enhanced here. It consists of notices for the public and notices for members. These are organised by category and presented in the order that they are posted. Contextual navigation appears on the RHS in this part of the site .

Navigation between the two is instinctive. One can move from one part to the other via the top navigation bar and the [ +/- IExpE Notices ] that appears in the footer when one is NOT in the Notices section. You are in the notices section now and so won’t see it. All the information you need is in the RHS navigation pane.

Images

The site is devoid of images. We plan to rectify that, and designed the site to show images off individually and in galleries. Digital imagery has revolutionised the availability of good images in the years since the former site was taken into use, then it was still mostly a matter of persuading companies to part with good quality prints to scan in as digital images. That is no longer the case.

Important! Members Only

We did tranfer details of members who already had successfully applied for access to the sections of the web site reserved for members of the Institute and passed them new passwords. Members wishing to apply for access now may do so here.

Questions

I would be happy to answer any technical questions on the new site, you can contact me here. [ Hint: Queries and Comments on this Web Site ]. All other questions, including queries about lost or forgotten user names and passwords, should be directed to the Secretariat.
