Membership Categories

Voting Members

The 3 types of voting membership of the Institute of Explosives Engineers are Fellow, Member and Associate. The entrance qualifications and experience for each of these is described below. Appropriately qualified persons may enter at any of these levels and there is a progressive path from Student through Associate to

Member

The status of Member of the Institute of Explosives Engineers (M.I.Exp .E.) shall be accorded by the Council to candidates not less than 23 years old who shall have:

Exceptionally, applicants who do not hold adequate academic and/or professional qualifications which would permit exemption from the Institute examinations, and who are applying for membership without examination, shall be required to demonstrate their competence by submitting a thesis of 5000 words in length on a topic related to explosives technology. This thesis may be supported by appropriate diagrams, graphs and photographs. The candidate shall be interviewed by an examining board appointed for the purpose and this board shall ascertain whether the applicant has knowledge adequate to have completed the thesis by his own original work and shall report its findings to the Membership Committee.

Associate

The status of Associate of the Institute of Explosives Engineers (A.I.Exp.E.) shall be granted by the Council to candidates not less than 23 years old who shall have either:

Associates are not entitled to be nominated for election as members of Council.

Non Voting Members

Company Members

The status of Company Member may he accorded to any company, firm, or sole trader engaged in the use of explosives in mining, tunneling, quarrying, demolition, excavation, underwater or offshore work, or other appropriate commercial or government enterprise, as approved by Council. Company Members are not allowed to vote in elections. Company Members may use the Institute logo.

Admission to Company Membership shall be granted provided that suitable applicants are proposed by one Company Member or Council Member, seconded by another Company Member or Council Member, and approved by the Council. Each application must be accompanied by proof that the Company has been engaged in a qualifying area of enterprise as described above for a minimum of 3 years and employs in management of such business functions one or more Voting Members of this Institute. Failure to keep to this latter requirement after admission may lead to expulsion.

Company Affiliate Membership

Any company, firm or sole trader shall be admissible as a Company Affiliate provided that the applicant satisfies Council that it has an appropriate interest in explosives technology. Company Affiliates shall receive all information issued to Company Members, and shall be eligible to send representatives to branch meetings, conferences, examinations and training courses on the same basis as Company Members. Company Affiliates shall not be eligible to use the Institute logo on business letterheads, or to otherwise claim to be Company Members of the Institute.

Student

The status of Student shall be granted by the Council to candidates of at least 18 years of age who are either following a course of study or otherwise learning a trade which requires knowledge of the science and/or practice of explosives technology. Students are not entitled to vote or to use any designatory letters after their name.

Fellow

The status of Fellow of the Institute of Explosives Engineers (F.I.Exp.E.) shall he conferred by a resolution of a general meeting of Members upon members of the Institute who:

Honorary Fellow

The status of Honorary Fellow may be accorded to someone who is, to the satisfaction of Council, worthy. Honorary Fellows shall be either distinguished persons, who from their position have been or are enabled to render assistance to the Institute, or persons eminent for science and experience in pursuits connected with explosives engineering, whether or not currently engaged in the practice of that profession. An Honorary Fellow may or may not have voting rights depending on his/her previous membership status.
